Gift Card Terms

Effective date: October 22, 2026

This is a demo site for a fictional shop, The Copper Spoon, and it sells no gift cards. These are the terms a real shop would publish.

No expiration date, no fees

Our gift cards, plastic and e-gift, never expire, and we never charge a fee against them: no activation fee, no dormancy or inactivity fee, no monthly service fee. The balance stays on the card until it is spent.

We go further than the law asks. South Carolina allows a gift certificate to expire one year after it is sold if the date is printed on its front, and requires any fee or loss of value over time to be stated on the card, its sleeve or the receipt (S.C. Code Ann. 39-1-55). Federal law requires the funds on a store gift card to last at least five years and limits inactivity fees (Credit CARD Act of 2009, 12 CFR 1005.20). A card with no expiry and no fees meets both and is easier to understand.

Using a gift card

Use it at either shop for scoops, sundaes, fountain drinks, pints, party packs and merch, and by phone for shipped boxes and their shipping. It cannot be used to buy another gift card. Any balance left after a purchase stays on the card.

Balance, lost cards and cash

Check a balance at either counter or by phone. A lost or stolen card can be replaced with its remaining balance if you have the receipt or the e-gift email, at no charge; a balance spent before you tell us cannot be restored. Gift cards are not redeemable for cash, except where a state law requires a cash payout of a small remaining balance.
